Despite the consumers shunning away from bottled water, most of them are embracing Waiakea Water. Why is this? Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water is different. It is naturally alkaline and contains important minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium all which play a major role in the development of bones, hair, nails, teeth and skin.

The water is obtained naturally from snowmelt and rain at the peak of Mauna Lao Volcano in Big Island, Hawaii after filtering through 14,000 feet of porous lava.

Ryan Emmons began Waiakea water in 2012 when he discovered that the water he and his family enjoyed during the summer and winter holidays in Hawaii was naturally pure, healthy and tasty. Additionally, its source was sustainable given that the source aquifer had a 1.4 billion gallon recharge rate.

He therefore started Waiakea Inc. with Waiakea spring as their website name. The company’s slogan is drink healthy, drink sustainably, drink ethically. Emmons was only 22 at the time which did not deter him despite most entrepreneurs in the beverage industry being over 50.

According to Baby Boomster, Waiakea water ensures that its operation do not negatively impact on the environment thus ensuring its sustainability. This is evident in the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles in packaging as opposed to manufacturing new bottles.

Through its collaboration with Long Beach, a packaging facility based in California, Waiakea water has managed to reduce carbon emission during manufacture of bottles by more than 90% and also reduced energy consumption by 88%. The plastic used is also BPA-free ensuring that the water is safe from any BPA contaminants.

Waiakea water upholds ethics by donating water to disadvantaged communities living in the rural areas of Africa. For every litre of water purchased, Waiakea donates 650 litres of water through an organization called Pump Aid. Currently, it has donated over 500 million litres of water.

Everyone wants to be associated with a company that has great consideration for the environment and the disadvantaged in the society, which is why Waiakea continues to increase its sales.

After operating for only four years, Waiakea has grown by 5000%. Its sales have increased from 2,304 cases to 122,400 annual which is a growth rate of 170%. This water is available in over 2000 stores including Whole Foods and Wawa across 30 states in the United States. Valued at over $10 million, the company is venturing to other global markets and will increase that value very soon. The efforts of Waiakea have not gone unnoticed. It came first in the 10 Best Volcanic Bottled Water Labels of 2016. It is the first bottled water company to be carbon-neutral certified. This was due to its anti-deforestation efforts it made under its eco-friendly initiatives.
